Center for Applied Competitive Technologies

Who We Are

The College of the Canyons CACT is one of 15 technology-training centers located at California community colleges. The CACTs are dedicated to help California manufacturers compete successfully in the global marketplace by providing them with a single point access to advanced technology training. They facilitate the adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies, assist in the deployment of new technology, deliver education and training, and provide expert technical assistance.

The CACT serves as a resource to:

Bring Advanced Technologies to Business.

A connecting point between business and technology, the CACT department at College of the Canyons has created the following programs.

  • CACTCalifornia Alliance for Digital Manufacturing (CADM)

With a grant form the Chancellors Office, the CACT is working with two other colleges to set up a network of digital manufacturing services. These include CAD/CAM, 3-D Modeling, Rapid Prototyping and Reverse Engineering which enable small manufacturing and engineering firms to test the waters and to incorporate these technologies into the school’s curriculum.
  • Advanced CAD/CAM Instruction

The CACT is instrumental in acquiring, and keeping current, the hardware and software to enable the college  to teach CATIA, Unigraphics and MasterCAM.  Soon to be added are SolidWorks and OrCAD.
  • Robotics

In order to simulate interest among high school students in technology careers the CACT is working with COC and the William S. Hart District to offer the first Robotics Academy for High School Students.  Plans are to make this an ongoing offering at COC.
  • Affiliation with NCATC

The CACT is a member of the National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers and has access to solutions and expertise from 150 member institutions across the United States and Canada.
  • Expanding Business with China

At the request of local business the CACT and COC has put together a full day conference to help small and medium companies understand the how, what, where and why of doing business with China.

Assist the College of the Canyons and Other schools in Integrating Technology into their Programs.

As the project grows, students who are entering the manufacturing world for the first time will augment their classroom education with industry internships, earning college credit for their on-the-job learning.

Students who are already employed in manufacturing will learn new technologies and practices which will further their professional careers.

Mission

Our Project Mission is to develop the skills required in high technology manufacturing companies in order to meet the staffing and operational needs of employers in the greater Santa Clarita Valley region. Our four goals are:

  1. Establish a strong manufacturing consortium of employers, educators and government agencies to develop an industry-based manufacturing technology education center in the Santa Clarita Valley.
  2. Secure resources and funds needed to implement a manufacturing education facility within the Santa Clarita Valley.
  3. Develop training and education programs which will prepare new workers for manufacturing jobs in the Santa Clarita Valley and upgrade the skills of existing workers in the region.
  4. Continuously improve training and education programs to ensure that trainees learn "best practices" manufacturing techniques on modern, state of the art equipment from qualified instructors with industry experience
