"The transformation to digital manufacturing will provide the greatest increase in manufacturing productivity realized throughout history. The dramatic expansion of omputing power and its application to an ever greater range of tasks in the business environment is without a doubt the single most powerful technological change affecting manufacturing today. Digital data is the minimum objective required to participate in the future manufacturing enterprise."
-Advanced Manufacturing Magazine, 2004

Digital manufacturing is a process by which the development of new products in manufacturing is accelerated using computerized machinery that can produce prototypes and models of new products, as well as the manufacturing of machine parts and end-use products, with exacting precision.

From the initial design stage through to completion and mass production, this process uses new technologies to promote the reduction of time and increase precision, including the utilization of 3D, CAD/CAM, Rapid Prototyping, Rapid Tooling, and management techniques which streamline the manufacturing process.
By using digital and rapid product development, companies can reduce development costs for new products and get new products into the market faster. This will improve the competitiveness and success of American manufacturing companies, but it requires engineering technicians with specialized skills.
